Question
please could you tell me why me gelding turns his back on me and puts his ears flat to his head, also when i let him out of his stable in the mornings his ears go flat and he looks very angry i have never been nasty to him only gave him lots of love and praise, how can i stop this

Answer
Hi Julie-
Thanks for your question. It sounds to me as though your gelding does not respect you, perhaps from too much love and praise. I know that sounds wierd but in my opinion, you have put yourself "below" him in the "herd." Those are signs of superiority and dominance(his). You need to try a little tough love. Horses respond differently than dogs or other domestic animals to love and attention. If you watch a group of horses, the head horse lets their (usually her) wishes known by pinning her ears, extending her neck or darting her head at other horses and yes, turning her back. It is natural for a horse to want to "join up" but he is telling you he is in charge. My suggestion is to work him frequently, leading and if possible lounging him in a little round pen and make sure he knows who is in charge, not by being mean or aggressive but by correcting him firmly and calmly when he misbehaves and insisting over time that he does what you want him to. Once you assert your authority you should realize a gradual shift in your relationship. I also suggest you read some books on understanding horse behavior. There are tons available. I hope this helps. Best, Toni
