Question
I have a mini 9 year old mare, that foaled last june 2007. She had a colt. They are still together in the same pen and pasture. Can he breed her? Should we seperate them?

Answer
Hi Jami-
Thanks for your question. Is he weaned? Are you planning on gelding him? Generally, male horses reach sexual maturity about 12-18 mos. but there are exceptions. If you are not planning on gelding him, I would separate them pretty soon but you certainly can keep them near each other (but divided) for company. Some people feel it is kinder to geld prior to weaning (less trauma) but he really should be weaned by now. Hope this helps. Best, Toni
