Question
I baught a 5 year old mini mare that was run threw a auction her age was the oly information I was given and atempts to get a hold of the previous owner failed.  My cosern is that she seams to be getting very wide.  I have lots of experience with pregnant meres that are full size.  But with her long winter hair I just cant tell if she is pregnant or just to fat.  All of her seams to be belly and its getting bigger every day.  she was in very poor health when I braught her home and I now have had her for 4 months on good feed and deworming.  Any suggestiond on how to tell if she realy is pregant?

Answer
Hi Shawna-
Thanks for the question but no easy answer on this one! I have one that I did a pregnancy test on (blood test purchased online, but you have to know the breeding dates) that came out negative but I really think she still may be. The problem is that without a blood test or sonogram/exam by a vet, its pretty hard to tell- even for the "experts" particularly because minis have a tendency towards plumpness anyway. So- if you don't want to consult a vet, you'll just have to play the waiting game. The same rules apply for pregnancy in a mini as in a larger horse, though. It's easy to overfeed a mini- particularly if you are used to larger horses and the weight seems to settle mostly in the belly. Hope this helps, Toni
