diarrhea in mini horse

Question
QUESTION: Hi! We have a 4 yr. old mini mare who may be pregnant (the ultrasounds have been inconclusive).  Over the last week and a half, she has had diarrhea - there have been no changes to her diet; and she still has an appetite.  The vet gave us a pro-biotic to give her for 2 days; but didn't offer much of an explanation. What are some possible causes of diarrhea in minis? Should I be concerned - are there other things I should watch for? thanks!! -Diane

ANSWER: Hi Diane-
Thanks for the question. A few months ago we had a similar problem with a couple of mini weanlings. It can be caused by so many things, primarily viral or bacterial and the vet couldn't pin it down to one specific thing. I am assuming she is up-to-date on her worming? The good news is that both our babies were fine after pro-biotics, Pepto Bismal and even yogurt with the "good" active bacteria. Make sure she also has fresh, clean water and do what your vet recommends. How long ago was she bred? She could've caught something form the stallion. Keep an eye on her and call your vet back if she gets worse- wish I could be of more help but even the vets have trouble with this. Good luck, Toni

QUESTION: thanks for your reply! How often should we be deworming our minis?  My dad says just in the spring & in the fall; but I have read it should be every 8 weeks.  Who's right? (her last deworming was October 12, 2007)  thanks, -diane

Answer
Hi Diane-

Thanks for your question. I have heard as many answers to that as there are experts. They vary from what your dad says to monthly (which I think is too much). I am enclosing a link to a deworming schedule from Jeffers (pet and equine supplies) which is close to my vets' recommendations and uses a quarterly rotation (you can cut and paste it into your browser): http://jefferspet.com/ssc/Assets/deworming_rotation.htm  Hope this helps. Best, Toni
