Breeding Miniature Horse

Question
How long is it before you can tell if a miniature horse is pregnant?  What is the oldest age a miniature can be bred?  How often are mini's in heat?
Thanks,
Christy

Answer
Hi Christy-
According to my sources, an ultrasound can be performed as early as 18 days after exposure. Rectal exams on a big horse can usually tell around 30 days- but its more like 45-60 days on minis (because of the size of the baby). I have used blood tests but I got one yes and one no and they were both pregnant so I don't think they're that reliable.  Usually a mare's cycle is about 21 days with her actually being in heat about 5-7 days of the cycle. This is usually from Spring through Fall. Minis have babies into their teens (even late teens) but the older they are, the harder it can be on them. Hope this helps. Best, Toni
