Question
i have a mini about 5 years old who may be pregnant but all tests come back negative. shes gotten to be huge and you can feel something moving when you hold your hand to her stomach for awhile. if she is pregnant shell be due in a couple months. how do i find out for sure if shes pregnant or not? do i just sit back and wait?

Answer
Hi Jenn-

Thanks for your question. Sorry for the delay in answering but I was out of the country.

I guess it depends on the tests. Some of them are not terribly accurate. I did the tests available from online suppliers on my last two mini mares: one came back positive, the other negative and they both have beautiful fillies! They were exposed at the same time and the tests were done at the same time so ....

The most accurate way is for your vet to examine her and possibly do a sonogram (which requires special mini probes so not all equine vets can do it).

Otherwise, keep checking her teats (if she's a maiden mare, its a good idea to get her used to them being handled anyway) and they should start to swell soon. She is usually about to deliver when she starts leaking milk or "waxes over" but again, that's not always the case.

You may want to consult a vet anyway regarding her vaccinations and be sure to worm her with rotation wormers safe for pregnant mares.

Hope this helps, Toni
