My mini rearing up on hind legs

Question
Hello Holly,
I have a 1 yr old mini stallion and he has not had much hands on when I got him he just had a little work with the lead. He likes to rear up when I am grooming or even sometimes when I am leading him he will take a stance & not move when I pull the lead & release that's when he will try to rear up. I would like to know if you know something in correcting this. I think it could be fear I just don't want him to get a hold on this habit would be bad &/or dangerous for us both. Thank You so much in advance

Answer
If you have a round pen or small arena you can you use as a roundpen I would recommend round penning him to gain his trust.  If you dont know how to round let me know and I will explain it to you.   Gaining the minis trust may eliminate him from rearing if he is scared because he trusts you.  When he chooses to not go try carrying a crop and wave it behind his drive line, if he then goes forward without rearing stop and reward him with words ot treats if he rears though quickly back him up like 5 steps and try it again.  But don't forget about your safety!  I hope this helps.  Keep me posted on how it goes!
