Question
Hi. My miniature donkey seems to be losing his hair in big patches. It is too early
and too cold for him to be shedding out and also too cold for flies (noseeums),
and there are no scabs on his skin - his hair is just falling out. Do you have any
idea of why this is happening? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you!

Answer
Hi Shannon and thanks for your question. I really don't know as much abut miniature donkeys as horses but several things come to mind. Assuming it isn't a dietary deficiency (your donkey is getting a well-balanced grain or pellet feed, adequate forage and vitamins and minerals via a block or lick, etc) or an allergy there are several skin diseases that I can think of. Skin diseases are usually caused by either bacteria or parasites and can be contagious. Mange is caused by tiny mites (and is sometimes treated with Ivermectin wormer) and can cause hair loss, as can lice which are more easily seen. There is also ringworm which can be treated with an iodine solution and can be spread to people. The other condition is rain rot or rain scald which is fairly common in the winter and in damp climates and can also be treated but I haven't seen that occur in large patches. Your best bet (and I know you don't want to hear this) is to have your vet do an exam and possibly a skin scraping. Even if hair loss due to his rubbing, there may be an underlying condition causing him to scratch. Sorry- no easy answer. Thanks and good luck, Toni
