Mini cart pulling on asphalt and distances

Question
Hi there.  My question will probably sound simple and silly but I can't find a concrete answer anywhere else.  I have been told it is acceptable to trot & canter minis on pavement when driving them whereas I would never dream of doing so with any other horse.  So I was wondering if this is true and why the difference?  Also, how long or how far can a mini pull an easy entry cart with either one adult or two adults on a flat road surface without overstressing/straining them?  My little guy seems like he would take me all day if I let him...he is loving "having a job" for the first time in his life and meets me at the fence with delight that he actually gets to go instead of the big horses for a change.  He mastered the art of driving in 2 lessons and is a champ!  Anyway, I want to make sure I am not harming or ruining him so any advice on distance and duration along with shoes/speed on pavement would be very, very appreciated!  Thanks so much for all the info you offer on this site...it has been most helpful!Kristina

Answer
Hi Kristina-
Sorry for the delay in answering. I have been doing some research and haven't been able to find much on this subject either. I am pretty sure that you can drive on pavement without much harm under normal circumstances. It's probably actually easier than dirt or gravel.I know we have in parades, for example.  I think the main concern might be to the hoof as you are not putting that much weight on top of him. I did find driving boots (by Easy Boot) for minis that might help. They were on Ozark Mtn. Mini-tack (www.minitack.com) which might be worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of it.Check also with your farrier. As far as distance, I found "up to 10 mi. when properly conditioned." Here's the thing- a lot depends on the size and age of your mini (they should be over 3YO) and the larger they are the more they can pull. I would not routinely pull 2 large adults with most minis- maybe an adult and a child. I am finding answers all over the place. I'm sure you can tell a lot from your mini- when he gets tired, if he's sore and of course, his enthusiasm which I think is great! Also a lot depends on the size of the cart- and the passengers, condition (bearings greased, tires properly inflated, etc.), harness fit (no rubbing for sores) and the like. Im afraid I can't give you too much more but I hope this helps. Best, Toni
