Getting mini to trust you

Question
I have 2 minis that are fine with you haltering them, brushing them, rubbing them etc. Someone gave me an 8 year old gelded mini that want let you touch him. He will come up to you for treats with the others but you still have to lean in to give it to him. If you come at him with nothing he well turn abruptly and take off running. How am i going to get this horse to the point of being able to trust me.

Answer
Hi-
Thanks for the question. Sorry for the delay in answering- the storms here knocked out the internet! I think your best bet is to get him in a stall or very small enclosure and start him all over like you would a baby. It will take time and patience. Start by trying to scratch his bottom- move slowly and confidently, talking softly. Once he will let you do that- work your way up his body until you can touch him all over. This is not a one-day deal- it may literally take weeks. It will be worth it in the end if you can get him to trust you. Unfortunately, it may be harder to start him than a baby as he probably hasn't had the socialization building blocks. You might also look at some "colt starting " or Parelli training info to learn how to "join up" and make him want to be part of your herd. Hope this helps- good luck! best, Toni
