clipping a stallion

Question
Hi

I recently purchased a little miniature stallion, very small but quick and strong.  I have a gelding, which I had gelded after purchase, and trained from the get-go.  It took a while but now my gelding loves to be clipped.  I purchased the little stallion two months ago, and he had not been handled.  I want to show him, so clipping was a must.  He did fine clipping his body, I tied him in front of the gelding and I think that helped.  However, doing his legs, the minute I get near them with the clippers he goes air-borne, kicking, rearing, whatever he can do. My husband  and I finally had to lay him down on the ground while he clipped most of the legs.  But, I fear this is only making the matter worse.  Any ideas?   Thanks, Judy

Answer
Hi Judy-
Thanks for the question. There is no easy answer to this one. I have so been through this with more than one mini and yes, I have laid them down and "sat" on them as well. Until they get used to it, the only thing we have found that helps is light sedation. That may sound extreme but it does help them cope with no lasting effects. Obviously, you will have to consult your vet if you decide to go this route and clip far enough in advance that there are no drugs left in his system by "show time." If you come up with a better way- please let ME know! Best, Toni
