I think their purpose is to bite me. I live in Tennessee and my work is near two ponds. We have pulled at lease half a dozen of these out of the ponds. From what I can tell, they like frogs, some fish, and salamanders. I'd say that it's job is to keep the population of those prey items down. I suspect that they also eat rodents.
