Vegetarian reptile

Question
Dear Yexalen,

I have always had some fascination about reptiles and now I'm considering adopting one as part of my animal family. The point is since I can't stand feeding my creatures living food so what would you suggest? Green iguanas can get really big so that's a no-no. From what I've read so far, Uromastyx would be a good choice for a vegetarian lizard...

Thank you very much for your time.

Answer
Hello Alexis, Uromastyx are vegetarians and make good pets. However it is difficult to find them at pet stores but if you can find a breeder or somewhere online it would be a good choice.

Have you researched their care yet?
There are several different types of Uromastyx with the most common being the Mali Uromastyx.

Another option might be a Crested Gecko, yes they do eat insects but they are omniverous and there are other options rather then live food. Most of the time they will eat food that isn't moving which is rare for some other omniverous animals. Many people feed them CGD (Crested Gecko Diet) which is basically a powder mix that turns into a paste and they get most of the nutrients they need from that. They can also be fed fruit and vegetables. However because they do like insects you can buy freeze dried already dead crickets that still have all the nutrients that are needed. They come in cans at most pet stores with a reptile selection. They are nocturnal and don't get very big. But the pre-dead insects might be a solution if you feel comfortable with that. Some say if you are feeding the CGD that you don't need to supply crickets or other live food. So researching these geckos and finding information about the feeding might be a choice for you too.

Here is a simple care sheet on them:

So let me know what you think and if you have any more questions on either species,
Good luck
