My Leo and her new living area

Question
QUESTION: Hi Tracie! I just recently bought a Leopard Gecko who came with a 10 gallon tank with a wood chip/bark-like substrate.  She's 4-5 years old and I switched her to a much bigger tank with a sand substrate, added a humidity chamber, and other places for her to climb or lay on.  She explored her new home the first day she came in, but the last few days she's stayed in her rock enclosure (which she's had most of her life) and rarely comes out.
I thought the problem was that the sand was too cold so I bought an under the tank heater, but even when I handle her and place her on the warm side she moves back to her rock.  I feel like she hates the sand and don't know what to do.  Should I wait another week to see if she gets used to it? Should I switch back to another substrate?  I appreciate your help and look forward to your answer.  Thank you!

ANSWER: Hello Sam,

Well, normally it takes 1-2 week for them to get used to a new tank.
Is she eating?  What are you feeding her?
Where is the undertank heater located, at the end with a basking light?  She will need a hot spot of around 88-90 so you can use just a low wattage household bulb for basking or a ceramic heater in conjunction with the undertank heater.
Do you have a digital probe to measure the temps with?
Stick with the sand for now, to let her get used to it.  Make sure you feed her off of the sand as they can get impacted from that stuff.

QUESTION: Thanks very much Tracie.  Here are some answers to your questions:  I've been trying to feed her crickets and mealworms, but she hasn't had a great appetite for them.  I also have a bowl of calcium powder in her tank so she can eat that and stay away from the sand.  I've hand fed her a couple of waxworms in the past week just to make sure she's eating, and she has pooped normally.  I have bulbs (regular during the day and red at night) in conjunction with the heating pad and the temperature is around 92 degrees on the heating pad side.  Her rock is on the cool side, and she has her humidity chamber and hollowed log on the warm side.  She spends most of her time sleeping in her rock, and I did notice after I got her that her left eye is cloudy (it looks like cataracts, but her other eye is perfectly normal and she can see me and other things moving in/around her tank).  Since she's almost 5 her eyesight obviously hasn't affected her before, but I thought I'd let you know in case it's significant.  Thanks again and please let me know if you have any more advice.

ANSWER: Hello Sam,

Ok, that temp is ok, just make sure it doesn't not get any warmer than that.
The lighting is fine, as well.  She will lick the calcium when she wants it.  Or, she should.  If you feel that she can't see it well, you will need to dust the feeders.
Good you have the humidity chamber on the warm side.
The one eye looks cloudy?  That is very strange.  Yes, it is possible that one eye could be going bad & the other eye will be fine.  If you can continue to ensure that she is eating, then she should be ok.  There really is not much you can do about an eye getting a catarac on it though unfortunately.  If the other eye stays good, she will be fine with just one good eye.
Does it appear infected, or not?

QUESTION: I've been looking at it whenever I get the chance.  I don't think it's infected, but the lens seems slightly misshapen.  How would I know if it is infected?
She was walking around more tonight, which is encouraging, but she's back in her rock again.  I put some crickets and mealworms in her dish and dusted them with vitamins, but she still hasn't eaten them (it's been 2 days counting today since she ate a waxworm, and I still haven't seen her eat a cricket or a mealworm).  I'm more concerned about her eating than anything else.  Do you have any suggestions if she still hasn't eaten by tomorrow?  Thanks so much again, you've been very helpful.

Answer
Hello Sam,

Well, is there any discharge from the eye?  If not, then, it most likely is not infected.  It is possible that she has just lost vision in it for some unknown reason, genetics, age, etc.
Make sure the temps are spot on.  You could try to get some nutrition in her by getting some chicken or turkey babyfood & getting a plastic syringe & feeding her that way so she gets something in her.  Start with 1-2 ml's.
Let me know how she is doing.
