Question
QUESTION: My frilled dragon is about 10 months old, I have had him for about two months. When I first got him he didn't eat for acouple of days. One day he ate 6 crickets. Since then it was maybe one to two every third day. In the last week he has not eaten any. I have taken him to the vet. They gave him an antibiotic shot and fed him reptile-gel. I also took a stool sample in which they said it didn't show any bacterial infection. I have taken him to the vet three times now and since then he seems to be really mellow. I feed him the repti-gel at home and also give him water from a syringe. I try to feed him crickets and he just closes his eye when you put it near him. He just seems sick and life-less and I don't know what to do. The vet wasn't much help. Can you help

ANSWER: Hello Danette,

Can you review your tank setup with me?
What type & brand of UVB light are you using currently?  Is it a fluorescent tube bulb or a compact/coil light?  Are you using a bright white light or a colored light?
What are the temperatures in the tank, & what type of thermometer do you use?  A stick on type, a digital probe or a temp gun?
What is the humidity in the tank?
Which antibiotic shot was he given?  Is he still on an antibiotic now, an oral one?  If so, which one is it?  Why was he given an antibiotic shot, did they confirm that he had an infection of some type?
Are you supplementing calcium 4-5 times per week right now?
What type of reptile gel did you give him?

Can you post a picture of him for me?
Did the vet do a full fecal on him?  Did he have coccidia or worms, or did they not say?

QUESTION: The tank is 4 feet wide, 2 feet high, 18 inches wide. I have astro turf in the bottom. I also have some peaked moss on one side. I have 2 @ UVB Exo-terra repti-glow 5.0 bulbs. Temperature on hot side is 95-100. Cool side of the tank is 80-85. I use flukers digital temp/humidity. I don't know about the antibiotic that was given. The vet gave it just in case he had an infection. When the fecil sample came back it didn't show anything. I took him for three shots and stopped taking him because it seemed like he was getting worse. I have heard that frills get stressed really easy. I got the reptile gel from the vet. I looked up the ingredients and it has calcium in it so I haven't given any other calcium supplement. I was thinking of getting calcium drops so I could also add to his water to mist him with. With the high heat in the cage I have problems keeping the humidity up. I have a fogger also hooked to the tank. Would you suggest dividing his tank off for know, to keep him in a smaller area. After all he is only 16" from snout to tail.

Answer
Hello Danette,

That is a good sized tank, but he will need it when he is full grown though.
Ok, the Reptiglo 5 tube bulbs are extremely weak & do not give out much if any UVB lighting.  I would recommend upgrading his UVB light to a Reptisun 10 tube bulb.  You can get that for a good price from here:

Are you using a bright white basking light too?
Yes, frills do get stressed easily.  I have a feeling that the antibiotics did make him worse & that he probably didn't even need them.
What exactly is the reptile gel, is it a probiotic or a food supplement?  What is the brand?
You could divide the tank if you want to, but it isn't necessary as long as the heating is all correct.
Is he eating anything right now?
You should probably give some probiotic to help his system get back to normal.  Medications tend to destroy their normal gut flora & they will lose their appetite most of the times while on medications.  If you are thinking about getting some liquid calcium, I sell some on my online reptile store.  Or, most pet stores carry some type of calcium as well.  Here is my website if you want to take a look:

Let me know how he is doing.
