Question
Hi. I have a juvenile chinese water dragon and he has been licking things such as sticks, rocks and moss. I first thought maybe he is thirsty so i put him his pond and he didnt drink, also in his soaks he dosent drink. I know he drinks because i have seen him swimming in his pond and drinking. he has a 5gal pond with water heater and waterfall, he also has a fogger above his waterfall. i also think maybe hes licking for calcium, but i feed him all his crickets and mealworms dusted with calcium and once a week he gets them sprayed with vitamin spray. Maybe hes just testing things out? was wondering if you have seen or heard of them doing this and maybe why?
He is housed in a 4ft by 3ft by 2ft custom cage. 3ft zoo med 10.0 UV light, day time basking light and red heat light, his temps are 95F in basking spot and the rest of his cage stays about 87F and 80F at the bottom of his cage. i drop the temp to 78F at night. Humidity is at 95% after misting and stays around 75-80%, at the lowest it get to 65%. I use digital probe to measure. I think i have everything right, let me know if i need to change anything.

Answer
Hi Luke,
He is smelling everything in his cage.  Water Dragons smell with their tongues.  When they lick they are pulling scents into their mouth.  When this happens the scent contacts what s called the Jacobson's Organ which is located in the roof of their mouth.
This is how they can sense(smell) if a predator was in the area, another lizard and also their home. They can also smell to see if there was some food nearby. Your WD is learning what his home smells like...Once your dragon tames and say someone else was holding him and then you take him back..he with tongue flick you.  This really happens a lot when you become their safe place.  They are smelling to see if you are that safe place and generally calm when they know it is you  especially if they were not real comfy with another person holding them.  It sounds like your WD is starting to really settle into his home now and is smelling everything so he can "remember" his home/safe place and all the scents in it.
Its a good sign that he is doing that.
Their tongues are also pretty sticky and since they are almost constantly smelling things, its very important they do not have access to anything that they could pull into their mouth, even by accident such as string, hair, coins, rubber bands, tree bark, etc. Its also why its very important that when you wash the items in his cage, you rinse those items super good.
