Piggy Breeds

Question
I have recently invested in 2 lovely little piggies ( both female) and I and wondering if there are any colorations that are considered rare. Mine I believe are fairly common, however I am thinking of breeding them and maybe becoming a piggy breeder eventually. I am very curious about the colors though. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Amy,

It tends to be the texture of their hair rather than their colouring that determines the rarity and breed of a guinea pig. Some breeds require carefull pure-bred to non pure-bred breeding such as Dalmatians, so the black and white colouring can be considered rare. There's so many guinea pigs arounf though that no breeds are particularly uncommon. The book by Peter Gurney called "What's my guinea pig?" should help you out!

Before you become a breeder, please think about the implications. There are a lot of unwanted guinea pigs in the world and if you just want babies or to show them - it may be better to adopt piggies from rescues rather than breed your own. If you simply want to own lots, perhaps you could set up a guinea pig boarding business or your own rescue?

Hope this helps and if you have any other questions, just ask!

Best wishes,
Jenny.
