Unplayful Piggy...

Question
My little piggy, Mr. Wigglz (not sure if you remember him...he was the one I asked you about not eating his veggies) is very timid. I understand that cavies are timid in nature but he does not display the typical behavior as a young piggy does (or so I read). He doesn't run around much or play. When I have him out, he cuddles a lot but is never interested in exploring or playing.
Don't get me wrong; I love the cuddle time with him and love the fact that he wants to nuzzle close and purr but I am concerned that he doesn't ever want to play or have fun.
During floor time, if I have a pigloo out for him and his friend, Sheldon, he will just hide in the pigloo. If I take it away, they will do a couple of laps and then huddle in one corner. While in the cage, it's the same. Always wanting to hide.
Just want to know if this is typical behavior or if there is something else I can be doing to stimulate him to play and run around! Want to make sure he's a happy piggy!!

Answer
I apologize for not responding sooner. To answer your question, yes this is normal pig behavior. Every guinea pig has a different personality just as we do. Not all are as responsive to play. Some are lazy and just spend their floor time napping while others will romp and play.

A pigloo gives them an escape, so it's good that you removed it. If you have a pigloo in the cage I would take it out. That way they have to face the world around them and not hide from everything. It's difficult when you want so much for them to play with you like puppies do, but they dictate their own preferences and personalities.

Don't give up. Keep handling Wigglz as much as possible. Don't get discouraged by his responses, and don't take it personally. He's just not a "social butterfly".
