pregant guinea pig

QUESTION: Dear Jenny, I am pretty sure my guinea pig is pregnant. She has been gaining weight faster than my other one, she has also been moving slow and does not move alot. She eats alot and her nipples have been getting bigger so i compared hers to the other guinea pig and hers are way bigger. When i look at her from above she looks like a pear or eggplant.

ANSWER: It certainly sounds as though she may be pregnant. When was she with the boar? We can't always predict a due date as acurately as we can for other animals. Cavies don't breed as easily as rabbits do. Sometimes they're with a boar for weeks before conception actually takes place.

Gestation is 70 days for cavies, give or take a few days. The general rule of thumb is when you feel movement the sow typically delivers in about two to two and a half weeks. Some show evidence of pregnancy before others.

If she has been with a boar the possibility of her being pregnant are great. From now until she actually has babies it will be a waiting game.

QUESTION: My guinea pig has beeen with a male but that was in August. I got her on August 23 and she was in the cage with male guinea pigs. Would she be pregnant for this long?

Answer
That's an unusually long time for a pregnancy. Are you sure of the date you brought her home, and do you have any other pigs?  If so, make sure they're all female.

Another consideration is that she is older than you think and may be past her prime for 'child bearing' and is just getting that old age tummy that they get as they age, especially if she's been used for breeding and has had several litters.
