help needed for my humster

Question
My hamster accidentally fell from my hands in the carpet of my room. Now when she moves around, she uses her front legs and just drags her back legs around. I just wanted to know if she has broken her legs and if you had any advice for me to make Mika feel as comfortable as possible so she can heal quickly. I have removed the wheel from the cage but she still climbes in the cage and falls because she can't really use her back legs. She is also sleeping a lot, is this normal.Thank you.

Answer

she may have broken her legs or she may have fallen on her back and caused her to have a pinch nerve that has caused her to be unable to use her back legs. It seems like she is in shock and may become ill since she is struggling a lot. Hamsters can easily become sick if they have experienced something tramatic like a rough fall. I really think you should buy some hamster vitamins to give her more strength as well as some granola. I have maple granola that I found in a store and I give my hamster some every week. It is a little home remedy for them to help prevent diarrhea. The best thing to do is to take out the wheel and put the food and water bottle right where your hammie sleeps. buy a really soft bedding like soft sorbent or carefresh to help make it easier for your hammie to move around. I can't honestly say for sure whether or not your hammie will ever get the feeling back in it's legs. If the legs are broken then they should heal just fine, if it's a pinch nerve than you really don't know for sure whether or not your hammie will get better. I hope your hammie does and good luck.

Follow up question

Do I have to take her to a vet so he can tell me if she has broken legs or a pinched nerve. She eats fine, also she rests a lot, but she still keeps dragging her back feet. She also tries to climb up the cage, but i made some arrangements so she can't climb because i'm afraid she might hurt her feet when if she falls. I'll byu the vitamins and the other stuff tomorrow. Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Eno,

No you do not have to take her to a vet. There really isn't anything a vet can do for her. All she needs is rest. You can also give her some diced apples (without the skin) and carrots, about 4-5 pieces of each a day. It will take a least 3 weeks (or longer) for hamster to git fully recovered.

Thank you for your question and best of luck!
