should i buy another hamster

recently my dwarf hamster mother died with all the babies and we only found out after it was dead for a few days.i want to know what are the possible reasons why the mother died and i think the papa will be very lonely and i was wandering if i should buy a boy buddy as a playmate.pls reply asap!thank you so much!

Hi Yap Su Chii,

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss :(  There could be numerous reasons why the mother hamster died, and unfortunately, since I'm not a veterinarian, I cannot speculate as to why.  I did want to answer your second question, though.

As for your father hamster, he will get a little lonely, since Dwarves are social.  But, since he is an older hamster, it's too late to introduce him to a new hamster, especially a male.  (Ideally, Dwarves should be introduced to each other when they're about the ages of 6-8 weeks.)  They would just fight violently.  Instead, try to play with him more, so he won't be as lonely.
