Question
hi. today i was cleaning out my hamsters cage. when i picked her up i noticed that her nose had blackish stuff on it and all around it. she's not acting weird or sleeping more. her behavior is normal.she's a golden Syrian and she is about 5 months old. the black stuff was only on her nose.

Answer
Hi Vanessa

Hamsters can get colds, and their noses can water a bit and go a bit crusty - but there are usually other symptoms.  They can also rub their noses on bedding etc, which sometimes causes them to bleed.

Does this black 'stuff' come off - or is it part of her?  If it comes off, I would think she's been burrowing into the bedding and perhaps she's rubbed up against something. Have a good look round her cage to check there is nothing obvious - some of the hamster toys can shed their color, or perhaps there is food coloring in her dry mix that has come off on her.   If this black stuff is part of her - I would be inclined to monitor the situation - check inside her mouth that the color of her cheeks are pink and not blue, check her abdomen and paws that they are not blue.  Bluish tinges tend to indicate heart problems which need investigating by a vet.

However, from what you've said I think it is more likely to be something a lot simpler than this.

Good luck.
