Answer
Hi Sheena

There are differing views on broken legs - some people believe that pain relief should be prescribed as obviously you don't want to have a hamster in pain.  However, there is also the view that pain relief should  not be given- this is because the key thing for a broken leg is that it is allowed to heal and if the hamster isn't in pain they will continue to use it.

If this is a straightforward fracture then it should heal on its own.  It is important to remove the wheel and any platforms/tubes etc (if you can) so that the cage is on a single level.  Your hamster should be encouraged to rest and therefore food and water need to be close by so he doesn't have to keep walking.

If the leg looks swollen, if there is any bone sticking out, if the foot is blue (and not a healthy pink color) then it is important to get a vet to check him out. Also if it seems to be getting worse rather than better.   With more serious fractures the vet may opt to amputate the leg.  Three legged hamsters can get around OK in captivity without too much difficulty - you just need to modify their cage.  If it is a front leg then you sometimes have to assist with emptying cheek pouches.  If it comes to this and your hamster does end up losing a leg, please get back in touch and I can advise you on what to do.

Hopefully this is either a straightforward fracture or strain which will heal on its own (over the next few weeks).
