Question
Yesterday i was giving my hamster new food and i opened the bag of hamster food i have and put it in her food bowl and noticed that their was little bugs in it already!(I'm not sure what kind they were though, but they were black brown color and about the size of an ant,but not an ant)and i noticed that she's been itching lately,so I'm not sure if its because of the bugs that are making her itch and causing around her eyes to be red?or can her eating it cause the color of her poop to be green?(because she doesn't have wet tail i checked, but she's had it twice before already..can you help me please!!

Answer
Hi Michele

Hamsters do eat small insects in the wild and you can feed them meal worms.  However, I'm concerned that you found bugs in their mix - this makes me think the food has gone bad and is infested, rather than the manufacturer putting some small insects in it for nutrition purposes. This could also account for the color of her poop and red eyes.

I would advise getting a different mix and trying this.  Hamsters can get mites and this is treatable - but you need to get a vet to give you the necessary medication.  I would strongly advise you give her cage a good clean out, throw away any bedding, food etc.  Then get her to a vet - they can check if she has mites and treat accordingly.
