housing for Teddy Bear hamsters

Question
I used to have alot of hamsters as a child.  My most gentle one was a longhaired teddy bear.  I had him in quite a large habitrail home that my grandfather helped me create.  When my 10 year old asked for a hamster he had his heart set on starting a habitrail.  The lady at the pet store told us teddy bear hamsters grew too large to fit in the tubes and talked us into a three story wire cage. My son still wants habitrail.  Is the wire cage more appropriate?

Answer
If you get a habitrail, make sure it is the one for adult, standard hamsters, and not the one for dwarf hamsters.

A habitrail cage would be just fine for the teddy bear hamster, and a heck of a lot of fun for him as well. Habitrails give you the option of adding accessories, tubing, playhouses, ect. It gives the hamster plenty of options for exploration and playtime.

The wire cage on the other hand obviously lacks those options. Here is my set-up: all of my standard size (non dwarf hamsters) are housed in 10 gallon tanks with plenty of toys. My dwarf hamster is housed in a habitrail drawf hamster cage, with extra play tubes and play houses attached. He loves it and has a blast in that thing.

So a habitrail for a teddy bear hamster would be just fine. And it'll be fun for your son, who will have the option of attaching extra habitrail tubes and houses to it, building the cage however he likes.
