New Hamster is lazy!!!

Question
Hi there,
I bought a very young, male long-haired teddy bear hamster 2 days ago and first of all, I think he's actually a dwarf.  His hair isn't long and he's tiny.  But either way, I got him home and he ran around his cage for about 3 hours like a wild man and then went to sleep for a day and a half straight.  He gets up periodically and goes to the bathroom, which I assume means that he's eating/drinking, but other than that, he sleeps.  Do baby hamsters sleep alot?  Should I be worried.  He is easily awoken and his eyes are clear and he seems fine other than the fact that he's lazy.

Answer
Hello Carolyn,

I wouldn't be too worried about this. Hamsters are nocturnal and it would be very normal for them to sleep in the day. However, maybe he is just not used to you yet as well. To hand train him I would take the food out of the cage, put a little on your hand, stick your hand in his cage and wait for him to come to you. After doing this awhile you can gently stroke his back while he's sitting in your hand. After a week or so you should start taking him out of the cage every day for play time and exercise. Doing this will keep him more active during the day, less active at night. This will make him sleep less and be a more enjoyable pet. I hope every thing works out for you. GOOD LUCK!

Regards,
Sam
