Question
Our hamster surprised us Jan. 4 with 7 new pink pups.  We have never had this happen to us before.  So of course, we looked up a lot about hamster pups.  We found out that you have to seperate them from their mother.  We were wondering what kind of container we need to put them in.  We are not sure how long we will have them.  Is there something that we may have here at home we could use for their containers without going out and buying sever more cages?  We have thought about putting them in an aquarium.  Except someone told us that they may eat the plastic that holds the sides together.  What do you recommend?

Answer
Hi.
Congratulations!
Do not separate them from their mother until they are at least three weeks old. Do not attempt to touch or handle them until they are a week old, or she may abandon or eat one or all of her pups. The pups will start eating solid food at 10 days, and you must soak the food to soften it. If you have a drip water container, position it low enough for the pups to reach.
When the pups are 3 to 5 weeks old, put the pups together in a separate cage. Try to rehome them, or separate them into different cages, when they are between 7 and 12 weeks old.
Wishing you the best of luck,
Kathryn
