Blood and Scratching

Question
I have a very young, but friendly dwarf hamster. However recently I have found small amounts of blood on his bedding, and he has been scratching a lot.  It is possible that he is female, As he used to share a cage with a male hamster, who was very interested in his 'private area'.  The pet shop he was bought from is well known for getting the sex of their animals wrong!
Thanks

Answer
Hello Jess,
hamster don't have periods, so the bleeding is something that I would certainly bring to a vet's attention. Do you notice where the bleeding is coming from and what type of bedding are you using? Ceder and pine cause major reactions in small animals and sometimes aspen bedding can cause these reactions as well. I would certainly take your hamster to a vet to get looked at.
Keep me posted on what happens.
