Question
Hi
I got a dwarf hamster (think he's a winter white) about 3 weeks go. He was 3 weeks old when I got him, and was quite friendly. He would climb onto my hand and liked to be petted. This weekend he suddenly started running away when I put my hand into his cage and he won't climb on and jumps if I try to stroke him. Is this just a phase he's going through ? Around the same time he stopped being friendly, he had a major growth spurt - he's now almost adult sized. Is there anything I can do to calm him down and get him to trust me again ?
Any help would be much appreciated !!!

Answer
Dear Triona,
thank you for your question.
I think that your hamster's behaviour is normal. You just need patience to tame him again. Put your hand in your cage without trying to touch him and offer treats on your hand. He will get used to you again. When he's comfortable to sit on your hand, you can start moving it around in the cage with him sitting on top and eventually you can take him out (better put your other hand on top to prevent him from jumping off).
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer
