My baby Gerbils

Question
HI Charlotte I just bought two female baby gerbils and I have a couple of questions for you. We have had our Gerbils for about three weeks now and for some reason one of our gerbils seems to be more dominant than our other gerbil and we think that this may be affecting our other gerbil. They both sleep a lot (which is this normal?), but one of our gerbils has a bald spot on the top of her head that was not there when we first got her and it is really starting to worry us. I just want to make sure that our other gerbil is not hurting her. They do sleep in the same hide a way nesting bed and they both seem to get a long. Sometimes Ella the dominant one will sqeak at her when she is playing with something that she wants. We just dont know what to do? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hello Kristen!!

It is normal for their to be a dominant one of the two, and sometimes they may playfight and chase each other just to establish who is the dominant one!

When i first got one of my gerbils she got a bald patch on the side of her nose, i didn't know where it had come from or what it was. It didn't get bigger, and it stayed the same for ages, eventually it just disappeared. I can't tell you what it is, but how big is it? Is it quite small?
I suggest that you keep an eye on it, and if it gets bigger then consider getting a vet to check it over. If it stays the same and doesn't look sore or anything then give it a few weeks and it may just disappear!!

Gerbils tend to sleep for a few hours, then get up and play for an hour or so, and then sleep again. They sleep anytime of day or night, so it won't be unusual for you to see them asleep quite a bit. New toys, even just an egg box, or toilet roll will make them curious and you will probably find they will wake up to go and explore! So i don't think you need to worry!

I hope all this helps you a little bit?
Thank you,
Charlie.
