Question
Dear Kelly,
I am thinking of buying a syrian hamster but don't know how to
look for a healthy one.  I've done a little research on the topic
but all the websites i've been to say different things.  I am
hoping you can tell me the right way to chose a healthy female
syrian hamster.

Answer
Hi,

If you can get a hamster from a local breeder, that would be ideal.  However, if you can't, look for a clean, well-kept pet store.  Try to go to the pet store in the evening, when the hamsters will be awake.  Ask if the males are kept in separate cages from the females.  If the males and females are kept together, you run the risk of bringing home a pregnant female.

You should get a hamster that is between the ages of 6-8 weeks old.  Look for an alert hamster with bright, clean eyes and smooth, unruffled fur.  Make sure the ears and nose are clean and not crusty.  Also, be sure to look underneath the tail and make sure that the hamster's bottom is clean.  Finally, when you bring the hamster home, don't take it out of its little box.  Instead, place the box on its side in the cage and let the hamster come out when she wants.  Try not to touch her for 2 days, to let her become used to her new surroundings.  When you're ready to hold her, place a treat such as a plain Cheerio or a small piece of apple in the palm of your hand and place your hand in the cage.  When the hamster comes to investigate, gently scoop her up with both hands.  Make sure you're sitting on the floor while you're handling her.  (Nervous hamsters may jump, and if you're sitting on the floor, she won't have far to fall.)

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask :)
