Question
I've been to the vet's today with Cheese (my hamster) and she has a uterine infection, i have antibiotics to give her, the vet was very pessimistic about her chances, we discussed surgery (hysterectomy) which she led me to believe is her only realistic chance of recovery, however, she is approximately 2 year old, maybe a little older maybe a little younger, i'm not sure as she was already an adult when i got her.  In your opinion, at her age, would i be putting her through an un-necessary stress of an operation. Is it possible for her to recover and go on to have a good quality of life.  I have no problem paying for the surgery but find the thought of putting her through additional pain and distress most upsetting.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
well that is sort of a question of a judgement call.  Although all of our hamsters mean the world to us, I don't think I could put one of them through that.  If she recovers from the surgery she would have a quality life possibly, however hamsters just generally don't do well under circumstances such as surgery.  Again, your choice but I'm not sure I could bring myself to do that to one of ours.

I hope this helps.
