Question
last night was quite funny...

im keeping three dwarf hammies together in one cage. two males and a
female.  one of the males was trying his best to mount the female one. he
was nibbling and licking the female and tried his best to mount tha female,
but the female was always running away. he did this for about an hour, but
still he was not successful (i think). does it mean the she is already pregnant?
knowing that the other male did the same thing a week ago for only a single
try.

and another question... do females mate only when they are in heat? even
though how much a male tries to?

Answer
Hi Mac

Female hamsters come into season every 4th day - meaning that if they mate that day there is a very strong chance they will get pregnant.  To the best of my knowledge, I don't believe they can conceive on the other 3 days.  If she is pregnant, the gestation period for a dwarf is 18 - 21 days.  Remember, dwarf hamsters also mate on the day a female gives birth as she is especially fertile then, so if you think she is pregnant, it would be advisable to remove the males so that they don't mate again, otherwise you'll have loads of babies.  Also, hamsters become sexually active when they are 4 weeks old, therefore unless you want to be over-run, you should sex and separate out any boys in the litter when they are 4 weeks old.  The girls can live with the mum providing they don't fight.
