Hamster in pain I think

Question
My hamster this morning was making loud squeeking noises.
He never usually makes any noises at all. Whilst he was doing this, he had his eyes shut and looked like he was in pain. He was tensing up and stretching out and twisting round like there was something wrong with either his back end or his stomach. He was doing this for about 5 minutes then went into his little house to go to sleep. He was fine before as I was giving him some hamster treats and had just changed his water!?

Answer
Hi Lowes

Hamsters can make squeaking noises.  Sometimes these are signs of just 'chatting', but more of a squeal can indicate panic or a problem.

I think you need to investigate this further - after going into his house for a sleep - how is he?  Is he still behaving like this, or does it seem to have passed?  Have a good look at his rear end - is there any sign of blood or poo.  Is there any sign of diarrhea in his cage.  Is he going to the toilet - can you find any of his poos, or is he constipated?  Hamsters can suffer from intestinal problems - such as constipation, diarrhea and in the worst case they can suffer prolapses, but you would see blood coming from the rear, and possibly some of the intestines if he had suffered a prolapse.  If there is any sign of any of these, then you ought to get him to a vet as quickly as possible.

If he seems to be OK now, then I think it would be worth just keeping a close watch on him over the next few days to check that there is nothing wrong and that this was perhaps a 'one off'.

Hamster treats shouldn't cause this type of behavior.  If you are worried at all, then  a trip to the vet might put your mind at rest.

I hope you get on OK.
