Question
i recently bought a hamster from a pet store unknowing she was pregnant well actually in labour she gave birth on the night we got her home, i am just a little concerned as 2 of her pups who are now 6 days old, have a deformed looking front claw just one the other front paw is fine, the other babies are perfectly formed but the 2 in question don't have claws its just like a reddish blob where the claw should be.  Should i take them to the vet? they seem ok within themselves feeding moving ect and mother doesn't seem concerned either. is this a normal thing? could mom have trod on them or something like that, any advice would be appreciated as i was not expecting my hammy 2 have babies in fact i was told it was male. many thanks

Answer
Sometimes this happens with litters. In fact, when my hamster had pups, 3 hamsters had deformed paws just like yours and 2 were perfectly normal. Unfortunately, there is really nothing you can do. Before the litter is even born, some pups will "steal" nutrients from other pups, resulting in deformity. They will either go on to live their lives as normal as possible, or, most likely (with my hamsters too), the mother, knowing the pups won't survive, will eat the deformed pups. You probably won't see anything; it will seem like the deformed pups just disappeared. Be careful not to touch the mother, the pups, or the cage until the pups are 3-4 weeks old. If the human scent is on any of the pups, the mother will not recognize it, and, as a result, eat it. If any of the pups happens to fall out of the cage, use a clean spoon to pick it up and place it back in the cage. Separate the genders at 3-4 weeks to prevent brother-sister reproduction.
