Question
Hi,
I have a Syrian hamster who has been experiencing some illness. Her left eye is red and has blood around it. She has also been making this squeak/hiccuping noise and having uncontrollable shaking/hopping to go with the noises. I cannot take her to a vet as I haven't the money and my parents just don't care. Please help! What should I do?

Thank You,

Tony

Answer
Hello Tony,
I have not experienced the bloody eye unless you had another hamster with her, or she got injured. If you do have another hamster please separate them immediately. As for the other symptoms she most likely has a cold or allergy. First off make sure you are not using cedar or pine bedding which are both bad for hamsters and can cause allergies. Then I would recommend whipping your hamster's eye off with warm water and a towel. Move the hamster into a warmer room since it could be a cold it will need the heat. This is all I can tell you since I am not a vet. It could be something more serious then just a cold or allergy so watch your hammie closely and she may need a vet to save her, if it is something worse.
Hoping your hamster gets well soon,
Lorelei
