Question
I am not sure exactly what kind of hmaster we have. I know that he is just gold and white colored and at the moment is very small though we have had him for about 1 1/2 years. But, lately he has not had proper care and hasn't had enough food or water and his cage hadn't been cleaned in weeks. I normally take care of him when my sister doesn't but I have been very busy. But, now he can no longer walk. We believe his foot might be broken. Not sure on that. His eyes are stuck together and not sure why, but he has a piece of bedding stuck to his eye. One eye doesn't even look like it is there anymore. But, his hair might just be covering it. He can barely walk without stumbling or doing a weird somersault. My thought is that he's not going to make it much longer. He can't see where he is going and can't find his food or water very easily. I know we have to see a vet but my parents are out of town and we can't see a vet until they get back. So I would like to find a way to take care of him until then.

Answer
Dear Kaylyn,
thank you for your question.
You have a Syrian hamster and for them, 1.5 years can be an old age. It does sound like it, since old hamsters often cannot walk very well and suffer from stuck eyes (like humans with a conjunctivitis).
Make sure he has enough food and water near him all the time so that he doesn't have to walk much and don't bother him too much. Try cleaning his eyes gently with warm water. There's not much you can do apart from that. I'm sorry to say this, but you are probably right and he won't live very much longer.
If he is still alive when your parents come back, take the hamster to a vet by all means. Maybe all the vet can do is to put the hamster down, but at least you can give him a gentle way out that way.
I hope I was of some help, best wishes for you and the hamster.
