insect infestation of gerbilarium

We set up a peat and straw gerbilarium 4 weeks ago, today we discovered that it was crawling with tiny white insects and also some small flying insects. We have thoroughly cleaned tank etc. Any idea what the insects are, where they have come from etc and how we stop this happening again? (I am sure I have seen similar insects in house plant soil) I am grateful for any help.

Hi Eileen,

Did you use peat from a garden centre of from the garden? If so this will be why. They will probably be weavels. I woudl avoid using peat as i don't know where you can buy specially treated peat. Stick to pet sand or woodshavings!!!
