siberian gerbils ??

Question
Thank you very much...Here's my story. Six years ago we were given two ,"siberian gerbils, both were males",& a week later we had eight & then it seems but a short time later we had twenty-one & then we made a decision and took them all to a grassy field by the edge of the woods by our house, where they all rapidly and happily dispersed.I had at times thought about their chanches for survival & then last summer we saw a woody spotted gerbil,(hamster?),basking in the sun in our garden.I'm thinking that hamster/gerbils are not native to San Juan Island,Washington and there might be some survivors from preditors and hardships of living wild.

Answer
Did the pets that you had have long tails? Gerbils have long slender tails with a little bit of fur and hamsters have really short stubby tails that you can barely see. Gerbils and hamsters aren't native to the United States. Gerbils live about 2-4 years while hamsters live 2-3 years. That's a cute story. I've known people to set hamsters free and other people find them and take care of them. Someone may have seen a few and adopted them as their own.
