Question
I had a hamster for three years, but then passed away. He was not a baby when I got him. Last week, I just got a new hamster. He is young. I was just wondering why he makes squeeking noises. I read that squeaking noises can mean distress, but he makes them when he is playing in his cage. He seems happy and plays and exercizes at night, but he makes the squeaking noises. Is this just something a young hamster does or is there something wrong?

Answer
Dear Claire,
thank you for your question.
Young hamsters sometimes do that. It might be that he's calling for his siblings, but he will soon get used to being alone, Syrians don't get lonely. As long as he's active and eating, I wouldn't worry about it, it usually stops once the hamster grows older.
I hope I was of some help to you
