Question
QUESTION: So once the babies are ready to leave the mother you can keep them all babies together?
ANSWER: Hi Nicole,

Once the babies are 3 weeks old, they're fully weaned and ready to leave the mother.  If you have Syrian hamsters (the larger, more common type of hamster), then all the babies should stay together in one cage for another 3 weeks.  Once they are 6 weeks old, then you can give them away.  Remember, since Syrian hamsters are solitary, they should not live in the same cage once they're adults.  So, if someone wants more than one hamster, make sure they have enough cages.

If you have Dwarf hamsters, once they reach the age of 3 weeks, then you can place the boys in one cage and the girls in another cage.  They should stay in this arrangement for another 3 weeks.  Then, if you give them away, you should give them away in same-sex pairs, since Dwarves are very social animals.

Have a great day!

QUESTION: ok yea I do. sorry! I have fancy hamsters so after 3 weeks i take them away from the mother right. Can i give them away as soon as I seperate them from the mother??? cause their ready this Tuesday, the 27th, to be away from the mother so can I give them away this week?
ANSWER: Hi Nicole,

The babies should be 6 weeks old before you give them away.  So, once they are 3 weeks old, they should all be moved to a separate cage.  They should stay with their brothers and sisters in this one cage for another 3 weeks.  Then you can give them away (at the age of 6 weeks).

QUESTION: ok hi kelly its me again. sorry im such a bother but im 12 years old wat can i say. anyways. ok tommorrow tuesday their gonna be 3 weeks old. so i was wondering if it would be ok if i take the mother out tonight?? its the same anyways. Also can they drinky out of the normal sized water bottle that a adult hamster drinks out of? thank so much for ur help!!

Answer
Hi Nicole,

Actually, you should take the babies out of the cage, not the mother.  The mother hamster is used to her cage and shouldn't be moved.  Move all of the baby hamsters to a separate cage.  (It's fine to go ahead and do it tonight if you'd like.)

Yes, baby hamsters can drink out of a normal water bottle.  However, since they're so little, you'll need to lower it very close to the ground so that they can reach it.
