syrian hamsters living together

Question
Hello Katie!
Two months ago I bought 2 hamsters, I intended to buy one but the lady who solded to me said that she will feel alone and so I decided to buy a male for my girl but from another pet shop. My mistake was that I started reading about hamsters after I bought them, then I discovered that they were syrian hamsters. I have a small cage with an wheel and a house etc., in the first week they were playing or fighting a lot but now this it is just happening rarely, mostly in the past 2 weeks. She is biteing on his belly, the male doesen't react he just lays down and wait for her to leave and this happends right away. Do you think that there is a posibility that my hamsters may get along? They can't sleep alone, wherever they fall asleep they are allways together. As my hamster girl had babies I had to remove her and for 2 day he was felling down and wouldn't eat or go on the wheel, maybe he was missing her. They usualy quarrel for the wheel so I ordered a large cage with 2 wheels. I allways put plenty of food so they don't fight for it. Could her pregnancy be a reason of her biteing? They don't normaly fight, it was just in the first week and it was all peacefull till last week.

Answer

First of all syrians should not normally live together, especially male and female. I would suggest buying another cage to keep them seperate. Some reasons they should be seperated are the fights, multiple pregnancies(hamster should only have up to two litters no more), and because of the fights possible injuries. Since the male has an attachment to the female, you could let them see each other in a play pen or enclosed area as long as you are watching them and they don't fight. Or you could put there cages close together so they can see each other.
