Question
Hi my name is Ashley and I have a hamster that is about 3 years old. Just recently he is been acting very weird. His eyes are closed shut and he even sleeps differently. He has poop almost like stuck in his butt, and is very fat/ puffy like he's clogged. And when you hold him his paws and tummy are like stiff cold. He doesn't move around much but is definetly still alive. Any advice or help on what to do would be very helpful. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Ashley

This is a very good age for a hamster and unfortunately these are all signs of old age.  Around this time they do slow down and often feel cold.  They are also prone to getting abdominal tumors which tend to make them look 'pear shaped' and fat.  As the tumor grows they can struggle to walk as it puts pressure on their internal organs or spine.

The key thing is to make sure he is comfortable - check he has enough bedding and that food and water are close by so he doesn't have to walk anywhere to get them.  When my hamsters reach this stage I usually take them to a vet to be put to sleep - but only you can make that decision.  The key thing is determining whether he is in pain and what is his quality of life right now.  It is a hard decision, but sadly the reality is that when they reach this age with these symptoms they are not going to get any better.  All that can be done is to make them comfortable in some way or another.

Regarding his eyes - it is important he opens these daily otherwise pus can build up behind them.  If he can't/won't open them, then take a damp cloth and gently wipe the area - after a moment or two he should be able to open his eyes.

Do you have a local vet who treats small animals who would be able to advise you?  If you do take him confirm before you go what the cost is as some vets can be expensive so you might need to shop around.

I hope you get on OK.
