QuestionHI,
We've had a white dwarf hamster for about a week. He doesn't sem to eat
very much of the food that we have given him. We give him about 2-3
teaspoons of food each day, but most of it is left behind. He picks out the
sunflower, pumpkin seeds and corn and won't touch the rest. What should be
in a good mix for this type of hamster? I am thinking he might do better with
a different type of food and I worry because he is eating so little each day.
Everything I see says to feed them the same as other hamsters, but this
clearly isn't working. I have been warned not to feed him to much sweet food
like fruits, as the dwarfs have a tendency toward diabetes. He doesn't seem
to like any fresh foods either.
AnswerDear Nancy,
This is normal behavior for any small animal. dwarf hamsters don't eat much, and 3 teaspoons is way too much, you are just going to end up wasting food (and money). Try giving him, at the most, 2 tsp. of food, and don't refill his dish every day. This will ensure he will eat more of a variety of the mix, making him get more nutrients.
Hope this helps!
sincerely,
Sarah
