Question
I bought this hamster that we keep at the office for our mascot my supervisor insists that if you pick them up by the scruff of their neck it releases endorphines or something but i think that it looks mean and the only thing that i have found about peole picking them up by the scruff  is to keep them from biting.. Do you know anything about this?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Dawn,

I'm afraid I've never heard that one before!  As you suspected, the only reason to pick up a hamster by the fur on the back of the neck is if you know it will bite.  Even then, it's discouraged.  When an adult hamster is picked up by such a small piece of skin, it's rather painful for the hamster.  The correct way to pick up a hamster is to first make sure he sees your hand.  Then, gently scoop him up with both hands.  If he's hesitant about coming to your hand, try placing a treat, such as a plain Cheerio in the palm of your hand to give him a little incentive :)

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask :)
