Question
i have my hamster for 3 days and for 2 days it slept at daylight and active at night and i know that is normal, but for the third day it started to sleep at night, i just want to know if it's normal, does it need anything, or is it a sign of lack of caring and what do i need to do?
thank you very much for your help

Answer
Hi June,

Your hamster may be a bit bored.  Make sure he has a good solid wheel, so that he gets plenty of exercise.  (Avoid wheels with rungs, since hamsters' feet can get caught in the rungs.)  And, if you don't already have one, I would encourage you to get a Hamster Run-around Ball, sold at pet stores.  Let your hamster run in the ball for 10 minutes at a time, once or twice a day.  Make sure there are no stairs around, or cats or dogs.

And, play with your hamster more, to keep him entertained.  You may also want to give your hamster some new toys.

If your hamster is still sleeping all day and much of the night, you should take him to the vet.  Lethargy is a sign of many different illnesses, and your vet can diagnose him.

Have a great day!
