New hamsters weird behaviour

Question
Hi there. I recently got a Syrian hamster. He was 4 1/2 weeks old when I recieved him and now he is 6 1\2 weeks old. The other night, he started acting really weird. Earlier, he had been running around and acting normal. He has a 2-story cage with a tube running from the top to bottom. I had gone to open the top part of his cage and he immediately ran into the tube and stopped halfway down and stayed there for a long period of time. My boyfriend and I didn't know what was up, so we stuck a small piece of banana in front of the tube (on the bottom) and left him alone. Later we noticed that he had taken the banana and had retreated back to the top of his cage. Everytime we went to open the top, he would run into the tube. That was 2 nights ago. This morning, I went to check on him and he had shoved most of the bedding from the top of his cage into the tube and it had packed nearly halfway down the tube!! I was worried that he wouldn't be able to get water or food, so my boyfriend pulled the bedding out of the tube, clearing it.

I am really worried about my little hamster. What is wrong with him and why the sudden weird behaviour? He is acting really anxious and paranoid. Is there something wrong with him, or something that I need to do for him?

Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated!!!

Answer
hi Ashley,
don't worry, this is all quite normal behaviour for a relatively new hamster, even if you have had him 2 weeks. my hamsters all did it when they were young.
all it means is that he's not 100% sure of you at the minute, or if your boyfriend isn't around all the time, it may be him he's unsure of. it's quite normal behaviour to shift his bedding if he's a bit worried.
if he's shifted his bed into the tube he probably feels safe there, and to be honest, you're better off leaving his bedding where he decides to put it. it will confuse him if you move it and he will no doubt just move it again anyway!

he's perfectly safe in the tube if he decides to sleep in there and he will find a way to get to his food and water.
keep an eye on him to make sure he is eating and drinking, or if you're concerned , move his feast to a better place.

hope this helps,
thanks for your question, jewel
