baby dwarf hamster

Question
The mom had a litter of 8 but she ate 6 pups then died. I tried to take the pups to the pet stores but nobody had a nursing mom. One pup died but the other seems to be doing ok. I have been feeding it 3-4 drops of KMR every 3-4 hours around the clock. It is now 10 days old. I have been doing this for 2 days. I also put a heating pad, on low, under the cage. Is there anything else I should be doing and when do I give it regular hamster food?

Hi Diane,

i have never had to hand rear babies as young as this but you seem to be doing great!

I think that if he has survived for two days without getting weaker then he should be fine.

Babies will start to eat normal hamster mix even before their eyes are open so you should be trying to introduce it to the diet now - it may be best to cut it up into small pieces.
