How often do hamsters digest?

Hi,

I have a 5-6 weeks old drawf hamster. I was just wondering, how often do they poo and unrinate? Also, he has the tendency to digest in his nest, is that dirty? How can I make him poo outside his comfy nest?

Hi Jennifer,

How often a hamster urinates and defecates depends on their eating and drinking habits.  If you notice an abnormal amount of urine or feces, however, you would need to see your vet, because your hamster may have a problem.

As long as your hamster isn't urinating in his bedding, you shouldn't have to worry about the feces in his bedding.  A hamster's feces is hard and dry, so it won't affect the bedding.  If your hamster is urinating in the bedding, however, you can place some *unscented* cat litter in a corner of the cage.  Your hamster should start using the bathroom in the litter.
