Hamster Drinking habits

Question
I have a 6month old (as of tomorrow).
I noticed last night, he was at his water bottle quite frequently... He'd run in his wheel, then drink, silence, then drink, I'd start to fall asleep, then I would wake up and hear the sound of the bottle clicking. He'd go up to his nest, gather some food, then come back down and drink.

He goes all day without drinking (as he mostly sleeps except when he hears me opening anything that sounds like a treat bag.)

Is he drinking excessively or am I just noticing it more because his new bottle is noiser? (He had a "quiet bottle" before. one that gushed water if you just tapped it. This new bottle is a vaccum bottle that has that little ball that clicks when you try to drink.)

He was at the vet Yesterday to have his teeth trimmed, and the vet said he looks pretty good. eyes clear, ears up and alert, nose dry. So am I being a worry wart?

Answer
Hi,
It is normal for them to sleep throughout the day without drinking, so that's not a problem.
It is also very normal for him to drink up to 10 times per night. If you are still worried and thinking he is drinking even more than that, give him some lettuce, cucumber and other vegetables with a high water content, which will make him need to drink less.

As the vet said he seems fine, I would agree with their advice. I don't think you are being a "worry wart" (haha), but you're just alert to your hamsters behaviour, which is a good thing.

Best wishes,
Kathryn
